EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

In today’s world, the majority poses their own vehicle to keep pace with the hasty and fast lifestyle. Other reasons of such possession are the increase of purchasing power and the ease of getting vehicle finance. With the increasing number of vehicle on the road, parking has become a huge problem for people in urban area as the usage of the parking facilities increased. Thus, a good management of the parking area with the latest technology to reduce the processing time is essential to ensure that the traffic flow entering or exiting the parking area is smooth and under control.

Therefore, Smart Automated Parking System which is using the Number Plate Recognition technology is developed to increase the quality of parking management. This project is divided into 2 main parts. The first part is to design a microcontroller so it can handle the input and output required for the system. The second part is to design a front end subsystem which communicates with the output from the microcontroller through PC serial port. This project basically is built up by both hardware and software. Infrared sensor is used in this project to detect the existing of the vehicle while PIC16F877 is used to control and send data to PC or laptop through RS232. A Graphic User Interface (GUI) is developed to provide a friendly and convenience system for the parking user where all the parking process will be easier and faster.
